Economy and Enterprise Scrutiny Committee

Chair's welcome 

The aim of Council and partners for County Durham is to have a thriving economy with more and better jobs, better employment opportunities for all and reduced levels of poverty and deprivation. It is recognised that a thriving economy with more and better jobs will increase levels of disposable income and demand for goods and services which in turn will increase the number of businesses and provide an opportunity to help tackle economic deprivation. To achieve this aim Durham County Council and partners will utilise County Durham's assets, building on our existing portfolio of businesses and the tourist economy whilst equipping residents with the required skills and access to opportunities to increase prosperity.

In order to achieve this aim, Durham County Council and partners have identified the following five priorities: Thriving Durham City; vibrant and successful towns; sustainable neighbourhoods and rural communities; competitive and successful people and a top location for business.

The committee has focused on the five priorities identified above in formulating its work programme.

Support provided to the retail sector by Durham County Council Review - November 2018

This review found that there are many good projects and initiatives taking place to support the retail offer in the county's town centres but identified a number of areas where additional work can be done.

Scrutiny review of support provided for skills development within County Durham - October 2016

The aim of the review was to investigate and understand the role and performance of DCC and key partners in supporting skills development within County Durham.

Scrutiny review of tourism marketing activity undertaken by Visit County Durham - January 2015

This review focused on the work undertaken by Visit County Durham in marketing County Durham as a tourism destination.

Impact of policy changes on the economy of County Durham - May 2014

This review looked at changes in policy and funding that was being introduced by Government and how that would impact upon the economy of County Durham.
