Leisure centre memberships


Whether you're a swimmer, a gym enthusiast or enjoy our fitness classes, we have a number of membership options to choose from.

We have a great gym membership offer in February when you join online:

  • receive 15 months for the price of 12 when you take out a 'paid in full' annual membership by 28 February

How to join

Join online - the quickest and easiest way to get a leisure membership, or call into one of our leisure centres.

Memberships available

Gym membership - a gym membership will give you access to our gyms, swimming pools and fitness classes. Where you choose to exercise will determine which membership group you choose to sign up to.

Swimming memberships - swimming memberships are a great option if you swim regularly, and don't use the gym or group exercise classes.

Young Lifestyle membership - available for 11-15 year olds, this gym membership gives you access to one of our gyms (you choose) all six swimming pools.

Gym memberships

Our gym memberships give you access to up to five gyms (depending on your membership), free swimming and a wide range of Group Exercise fitness classes. 

We have three gym membership groups. The group membership you have determines which leisure centres you have unlimited access to (ie during opening and public swim times). These groups are:

  • Group 1 (Freeman's Quay (Durham City), Newton Aycliffe, Shildon-Sunnydale, Spennymoor, Teesdale (Barnard Castle))
  • Group 2 (Shildon-Sunnydale, Teesdale)
  • Group 3 (Abbey, Meadowfield, Chester-le-Street, Woodhouse Close, Riverside)

Group 1 Leisure Membership

Unlimited gym use during opening times, swimming - where available - during public swimming times and group exercise classes at the following leisure centres:

  • Freeman's Quay (Durham City)
  • Newton Aycliffe
  • Shildon-Sunnydale
  • Spennymoor
  • Teesdale (Barnard Castle)

Membership also includes:

  • Free 1:1 personal programme
  • Free sauna and steam where available
  • £1 swimming at Chester-le-Street leisure centre and Woodhouse Close leisure complex
  • Discounted group exercise classes at Abbey, Meadowfield and Chester-le-Street leisure centres, Woodhouse Close and Riverside leisure complexes

  • Discounted group exercise classes at Freeman's Quay, Spennymoor, Newton Aycliffe, Shildon- Sunnydale and Teesdale leisure centres

Swimming membership

A swimming membership gives you unlimited swimming (during public swimming times) at any of our pools at the following leisure centres:

Our swim membership includes aqua classes.

Young Lifestyle membership

If you're between 11 and 15 years old, our Young Lifestyle gym membership will give you access to the gym and some group fitness classes* at one of our leisure centres (you choose) and swimming across our six pools.

Choose your Young Lifestyle membership leisure centre

When you sign up to a Young Lifestyle membership, choose which leisure centre you want to use (you can only use one) for gym and group fitness classes*. Choose from the following leisure centres:

  • Freemans Quay
  • Newton Aycliffe
  • Shildon- Sunnydale
  • Spennymoor
  • Teesdale (Barnard Castle)
  • Abbey (Durham)
  • Chester le Street
  • Meadowfield
  • Woodhouse Close leisure complex (Bishop Auckland)
  • Riverside leisure complex (Chester le Street)

* Some group fitness classes have an age limit, check with your leisure centre for confirmation.

Swim with your Young Lifestyle membership

Membership includes unlimited swimming (during public swimming times) at any of our pools at the following leisure centres:

  • Teesdale
  • Chester-le-Street
  • Woodhouse Close leisure complex

Membership also includes:

  • Free 1:1 personal

This membership does not allow use of sauna and steam room facilities at our pools.

Who can join?

All memberships detailed, apart from Young Lifestyle membership are for age 16 years and above.

A Young Lifestyle membership is for 11 to 15 year olds

Introduce a friend

Do you have a friend who is looking for a new gym membership? Recommend them to sign up to a 12 month contract and you will get an extra month added to your membership free of charge.

Thrive card

You can now take advantage of our Culture and sport card (Thrive) card. If you are a thrive cardholder you can use this at any of our leisure centres to gain access to exclusive discounts on some of the services we offer.

Contract types

When you've chosen your gym or swimming membership, there are two different contract types, and you may pay less because you come under a concession.

12 month contract

If you commit to a 12 month gym or swimming contract, you sign up to the membership for 12 months, with your membership payment taken out of your account each month for a year. No contract (pay monthly)

If you do not want to commit to a 12 month gym or swimming membership, you can now take advantage of our no-contract membership. Download the Icon for pdf Gym non contract direct debit payment terms (PDF, 50.2kb) .

This offers you the flexibility to use the gym or swimming facilities for as long or as little as you want. You can take out a non-contract membership from as little as one to 12 months with a cancellation period of 30 days' notice.

Concessions

You are entitled to a reduced rate gym or swimming membership if you are:

  • over 60 years old
  • under 19 years old
  • unemployed

If you think you may be entitled to a reduced rate membership, speak to someone at one of our leisure centres.
