Educational support for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children (GRT)


We are dedicated to improving the education outcomes of all Traveller pupils in our county. Included in this group are also Fairground people, Circus people, Boat Travellers/Bargees, and New Travellers or New Age Travellers.

For parents and carers

We can help you and your family to:

  • understand the education system
  • get your child a place in a school or nursery
  • sort out any problems with your child's school such as attendance issues

We can help your child to:

  • settle into school
  • understand and be involved in the school curriculum
  • make friends and get used to school routines
  • make progress in school
  • find out about career and further education opportunities

For schools and professionals

We offer training for professionals working with Traveller families, delivering workshops to raise awareness of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller cultures to promote inclusion in our schools and wider communities.

We use academic data that we receive from schools to make sure measures are put in place where expected progress is not being made. We can offer:

  • direct academic support
  • early years outreach work
  • attendance advice and guidance
  • transition work
  • home liaison
  • raising awareness of GRT culture
  • pastoral support
  • small group work
  • access to school places for transient families
  • partnership working and advocacy
  • national networks of Traveller education professionals

The SEND and Inclusion courses page includes details of courses currently available. The courses are mainly for school staff but parents, child care providers, health workers can also book onto these courses if appropriate.
