Changes to park and ride service in Durham City

Published October 28, 2022 9.13am

Park and ride customers in Durham City will be able to make contactless card payments from next week.

Our park and ride services at Belmont, Howlands and Sniperley will be operated by new contractor, Gateshead Central, from Monday 31 October.

With additional buses and drivers in place to ensure reliability, the service will run every 15 minutes between the hours of 7am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday.

Customers can enjoy unlimited travel on the park and ride service for just £2 per day. Under 16s can travel for free if accompanied by an adult aged over 21, while bus pass holders can travel for free after 9.30am Monday to Friday and all day Saturday.

Before 9.30am on weekdays, there is a 50p charge for customers using a bus pass issued in County Durham.

Making the service even more convenient

Mark Jackson, head of transport and contract services, said: "Our park and ride service offers a reliable mode of transport for people who live, work in and visit Durham. Using the service can help to reduce congestion when travelling in and out of the city centre and support our aims to reduce carbon emissions across the county.

"We are pleased to have a new contractor in place to continue offering our customers a great service six days a week. The addition of a new contactless card payment system and extra buses and drivers will also make the park and ride even more convenient for residents and visitors."

Works to redevelop Durham Bus Station mean there are changes to some park and ride stops, with a revised timetable in place until the regeneration of the site is completed.
