Sandra's Story

Sandra is 71 years old and a retired teacher. She has always tried to stay fit with a variety of exercise classes, and she and did some jogging when she was much younger.

She has lived on her own for many years and was looking for an activity that she could do on my own as and when she felt like it, rather than having to wait for a class to start. Her daughter suggested that she join the Couch to 5k that Craig was running. She was very nervous, as she wasn't sure that she would be able to run for 30 minutes at her age but decided to give it a go. To her surprise she coped quite well with the first session, and the leader and helpers were so encouraging that she decided to go back the following week. Over the following weeks it was hard at times, but with lots of support from the leaders and friends that she made within the group she finished the course.

During Covid Sandra tried to keep fit by walking many miles, and running too, but sadly because of Covid rules she was not able to run with friends, and over the months the running stopped. She downloaded a Couch to 5k app and used that to get her back on track.

Sandra says: 'I would strongly advise anyone no matter what their fitness level is that they should get involved with a Couch to 5k. Getting fit with friends is still a challenge, but a much better challenge when you are with friends to help and encourage you along the way.'
