Des's Story (get moving)

Des is 89, and he lives in Fishburn on his own in a house. He has Alzheimer's disease, and following a knee replacement a few years ago he has now been told he that he needs his other knee replaced.

Des

Due to his age and other health conditions, Des had to shield during the Covid-19 Pandemic which meant he was very limited to what he would be able to do. Instead of letting confinement get the better of him Des, with support from his family, made an exercise programme for himself to make sure he maintained his mobility and strength in his legs. To maintain his walking, Des uses TV programmes to schedule his walks. During advert breaks on the movie channels and in between programmes he will walk up and down his sitting room (usually for around 10-15 minutes a time).

At the start of lockdown Des would wheel his trolly around and now he can physically lift the trolly and turn around safely - he says this is a good work out for his arms. He says: 'My legs are no trouble to me at all - with all my health problems I should be in pain or not able to do what I do. Doing my little routines have kept me walking and actually I am more steady with my walking stick than before lockdown!'
