Course details

How to prepare for and hold a Statutory Education, Health and Care Plan Annual Review

Description: The course will help school staff to prepare for and hold person centred reviews.

  • To understand a person centred approach to reviews
  • To have a clear understanding of how to organise and hold a statutory Education, Health and Care Plan annual review
  • To understand the paperwork requirements and timescales.

Outcomes: Increased confidence in:

  • promoting inclusive practice to improve the outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs
  • using a person centred approach to capture the wishes, views and feelings of the child/young person and parents/carers
  • organising and structuring the review meeting
  • action planning and outcome setting
  • completing the review paperwork
  • understanding timescales for the process.

Who the course is for: SENCOs, head teachers or school staff who are responsible for facilitating annual reviews

New SENCO training

Description: The course will enable new SENCOs to have a better understanding of their role. It is a full day and includes lunch.  The course provides:

  • information on duties and responsibilities from the SEND Code of Practice
  • information on County Durham's Local Offer and Graduated Approach
  • guidance on SEND processes and paperwork
  • an overview of SEN funding

Outcomes: Increased confidence in:

  • promoting inclusive practice to improve the outcomes for children and young people with Special Educational Needs
  • the role and responsibilities of a SENCO
  • the Graduated Approach
  • Special Educational Needs funding
  • utilising County Durham's Local Offer
  • understanding County Durham's SEND processes
  • contacting and working with other professionals.

Who the course is for: New or inexperienced SENCOs and those needing a refresher of the role.

SENCO as a strategic leader - training session 1

Description: The course will enable SENCOs to develop their strategic SEND role in the whole school context. It is a full day and includes lunch. We will provide information on strategic development and understanding of what is needed to provide and embed whole school systems for SEND.

Outcomes: Increased confidence in:

  • promoting inclusive practice to improve the outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs
  • understanding the concepts, principles and approaches of strategic leadership
  • effective time management
  • reporting to SLT and Governors
  • addressing underachievement/ progress of SEND pupils
  • accountability for SEND
  • applying SEND and OFSTED frameworks to practice
  • SEN funding, impact and value for money.

Who the course is for: All SENCOs - please note this training is a companion to follow new SENCO training if you are an inexperienced SENCO.

SENCO as a strategic leader - training session 2

Description: This course is the companion to SENCO as a Strategic Leader 1. The course will enable SENCOs to develop their strategic SEND role in supporting all school staff to provide effective provision for children and young people with SEND. We will provide guidance on promoting a whole school ethos for effective Special Educational Needs provision to build capacity across the workforce.

Outcomes: Increased confidence in:

  • promoting inclusive practice to improve the outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs
  • leading on a whole school approach to identifying special educational needs
  • monitoring the impact of special educational needs provision in your setting
  • capturing parent and pupil voice
  • applying SEND and OFSTED frameworks to practice
  • building capacity and skill of staff
  • deployment of, and monitoring the effectiveness of Teaching Assistants
  • leading continuous SEND professional development in your setting.

Understanding the processes of statutory Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) assessment

Description: The course will help school staff to understand when to apply for statutory assessment, the process involved and have a clear understanding of the statutory assessment process.

Outcomes: Increased confidence in:

  • promoting inclusive practice to improve the outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs
  • understanding how a statutory assessment forms part of a graduated approach to meet special educational needs
  • understanding the statutory assessment process
  • completing statutory assessment paperwork 
  • using 'My Story' to reflect the wishes, views and feelings of children, young people and parents/carers.

Understanding the Top Up Funding Paperwork and Process

Description: The course will enable staff to understand the top up funding process and how it fits into the graduated approach.

  • promoting inclusive practice to improve the outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs
  • understanding how a statutory assessment forms part of a graduated approach to meet special educational needs
  • understanding 'additional to different from' provision and how this is demonstrated
  • understanding the top up funding process
  • completing top up funding paperwork.

Understanding Provision Mapping

Description: The course will enable staff to understand provision mapping and how it can be used in schools to secure the entitlement of all learners and raise achievement and standards. Participant's will gain a clear understanding of provision mapping and how it can be used to support schools to monitor, evaluate and plan the development of their provision for pupils with SEND.

  • promoting inclusive practice to improve the outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs
  • securing the entitlement of all learners by systematically evaluating, planning and coordinating provision
  • developing a strategic, multi-agency view of what is currently available in school and what is needed to secure outcomes.

SEND Mediation and Tribunal

Description: The course will enable staff to have a clear understanding of the appeal process. The course will help staff:

  • understand what parents/carers can appeal
  • gain an understanding of disagreement resolution and mediation;
  • gain an understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Tribunal.

By the end of the session staff will have:

  • a deeper understanding of how promoting inclusive practice improves the outcomes for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities
  • an understanding of parents' and young people's right to appeal to the Tribunal about EHC needs assessments and EHC plans
  • an ability to be able to discuss appeals processes with parents/carers
  • increased confidence in acting as a witness at SEND Tribunal
  • the opportunity to share experiences.
