We have teamed up with a local housing developer to deliver affordable homes for residents.

We contributed almost £250,000 from money raised via housing developments to seven affordable properties, which Chapter Homes is putting the finishing touches to at Peterlee.

We have a dedicated funding pool with which to facilitate the delivery of affordable housing, which is made up of contributions paid by developers in lieu of delivering such homes on their sites.

Chapter Homes applied for and was given £247,800 from the fund to deliver the affordable units at its Oakfield Gardens development.

The two bedroom homes are a mix of affordable home ownership and rental, exclusively available to those within the local area or with a local connection.

Cllr Kevin Shaw, our Cabinet member for strategic housing, said: "Providing good quality affordable homes in the places people want to live is a fundamental part of our strategic housing plan.

"And we are very much committed to working with housing builders and providers to ensure that more affordable housing is available for our residents.

"Building the right homes in the right places further attracts investment which will be crucial for future employment and essential to helping our economy get back on track following the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

Boost for residents

"We are therefore really pleased to provide the funding for this development and look forward to local residents enjoying living in these homes."

Richard Roddam, development director at Chapter Homes, added: "Chapter Homes is committed to the delivery of a range of quality new homes and through working alongside Durham County Council, we have secured additional funding to support the delivery of seven new affordable homes. These homes will allow customers to get that first foot on the property ladder or enable them to move into a quality new home at an affordable rent."
