Our Borrow a Bike scheme is now offering the town's residents and employees a chance to save money and keep healthy on their journey to and from work

Borrow a Bike Shildon

Locomotion Way multi-user route, between Shildon and Newton Aycliffe.

People who commute to or from Shildon can borrow a bike, helmet and other cycling equipment at no cost. Free cycling training and support is also available throughout the three-month loan period for those who want to improve their confidence.

The initiative is provided by us with support from County Durham Sport, Recyke Y'Bike and Dr. Spokes.

Healthier forms of travel

Cllr Charlie Kay, our cycling champion, said: "During the coronavirus pandemic we've seen an increase in the number of people walking and cycling. We want to encourage people to continue using these healthier forms of travel and the introduction of the Borrow a Bike scheme is just one of the improvements we're making to our walking and cycling networks.

"By providing free access to a bike, we're helping people who want to return to their workplace, in line with government guidance, but who need transport. If the scheme proves popular, it could be rolled-out to other locations throughout the county."
