The Prime Minister has today set out the next steps in the easing of lockdown. See the press conference at Youtube: Prime Minister's Coronavirus press conference (10 May 2021) for details.

Between 4.00pm on Wednesday 12 May and 7.30am on Thursday 13 May, the following systems will be unavailable due to essential maintenance: our online council tax, business rates and housing benefit overpayments service, our welfare assistance form and our test and trace payments form. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

How the New Elvet Bridge roadworks will affect you

Due to the closure of New Elvet Bridge, there will be increased traffic and congestion across other routes around the city. Some public transport will also be re-routed during the roadworks. This page explains how you may be affected.

Crucial repairs and maintenance on New Elvet Bridge started in  July 2020 for approximately 14 months. Durham City centre remains open throughout the works to welcome all visitors, regular and new.

See below information about how you'll be affected if you travel through Durham city:

If you are walking or cycling through the city

During the works it will be necessary to close a section of footpath 78 and cycleway NCN14. Information for walkers and cyclists during New Elvet works details the sections closed and relevant diversion information.

Additional measures to keep traffic moving through the city

We are also implementing other measures to help keep traffic moving through the city, including improvements to road markings, suspension of some parking bays and changing traffic signal timings.
