Consultation on Durham Bus Station

We wanted your views on new designs for Durham City Bus Station. We wanted to make sure that the designs we have developed are fit for purpose, suitable for all users and that they meet previous consultation feedback considerations and priorities.

Following this consultation all the feedback was reviewed to help shape the final designs for the bus station and work to create a new bus station for Durham City is pressing ahead. For more information please visit New Durham City bus station plans get £3.6m funding boost

Background

The existing bus station isn't very visually appealing. We would like to replace it with a more modern and welcoming building that's suitable for all users.

In 2015, we consulted about regenerating North Road, including the bus station. Feedback from the consultation led us to look at designs for just a new bus station, to be developed on its current site.

Your feedback was included in the design brief. It was mainly very positive and indicated that there should be emphasis on security, safety and accessibility for all.

The new project

The benefits of rebuilding the station in its current location include:

  • being able to accommodate the construction within the site
  • lower estimated costs
  • less disruption to surrounding roads
  • a shorter construction period

What we consulted on

We want to get your opinion on the current designs. We would like to know if they:

  • create a transport hub within a historic setting;
  • provide a new, modern bus station, suitable for all users
  • address previous consultation feedback priorities:
    • improved safety and reduced the fear of crime, including internal CCTV
    • better seating, more natural lighting
    • better toilet and baby changing facilities
    • improved safety for entering, moving within and exiting the building into North Road
    • improved ability to see bus numbers and destinations, electronic travel and timetable information
    • a building that fits into its historic surroundings using materials consistent with Conservation Area setting
    • sustainable, energy efficient building materials
