Register a still birth

Information about registering a still birth.

virus

As all of our register offices are closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, you will only be able to register a still birth through an appointment by telephone. Please contact us on 03000 266 000 to arrange an appointment.

When a child is still born, the doctor or midwife who was present at the birth or examined the body will issue a medical certificate of still birth.

Arrangements must then be made to have the medical certificate taken to the Register Office. A still birth must be registered under normal circumstances within 42 days.

You may register a still birth in any of our register offices. Offices opening times vary, and all appointments must be booked in advance so it is important that you ring beforehand.
