Walking and running are two of the most effective exercises you can do. Why not take advantage of the extensive variety of walking and running opportunities on offer in the county that are suitable for the whole family and for all fitness levels.
Across the County our trained run leaders are delivering free programmes of Couch to 5K running plans.
Couch to 5K is a running plan developed to help absolute beginners get into running, the plan works because it starts with a mix of running and walking, to gradually build up your fitness and stamina. Week one involves running for just a minute at a time, followed by walking for two minutes, creating realistic expectations and making the challenge feel achievable right from the start. Couch to 5K is for everyone. Whether you have never run before, or if you want to get back into being more active, Couch to 5K is a free and easy way of getting fitter, happier and healthier.
Our next round of programmes will be starting in May with the target of completing the Durham City Run in July.

Walk4life County Durham is a programme of free, short led walks, operating across the whole County. These walks are a great opportunity for you to get active and maintain a healthy lifestyle. With the support of trained volunteers we currently deliver 33 weekly walks ranging from 30 minutes to 90 minutes in duration.
Why not enjoy some fresh air and join us on one of these walks. A 30 minute walk leaves the main entrance of County Hall every Wednesday lunchtime at 12.30pm.

We have a comprehensive Countryside events and guided walks programme. Walks range from easy to difficult, with access to a variety of footpaths and bridleways across the county. There's also Railway paths, Places to walk and ride and Walks in the countryside.
