Volunteering with the council

We have a number of volunteering opportunities that you can sign up to and which will help us to improve services across the council.

Volunteering is a great way to support your local community and a fantastic way of getting into the working environment. We have a variety of volunteering opportunities that you can sign up to and which will help us enhance the wide range of services we provide to communities.

You can assist with enhancing our Historic Environment Record. This is desk based work using computers and hard copy information. There are also occasional opportunities to participate in research excavations. For more information get in touch with our Archaeology team.

Archives and local history

You can volunteer with the Durham County Record Office to help preserve our history and make it accessible to a worldwide audience. Our Durham at War project is revealing the impact of the First World War on communities in County Durham, and telling the story of their people - many volunteer opportunities can be carried out at home or in your local library.

Composter Volunteer Scheme

You can join our team of enthusiastic composting volunteers, called master composters, and promote the benefits of home composting as a way of reducing waste and helping the environment.

Culture and events

Environmental improvement volunteering

There are lots of opportunities to get involved in small, local events, that help contribute towards making local neighbourhoods a cleaner and greener place to live, work, visit and play.  Examples include: tidying up an outdoor open space, painting the fence at a local park, litter picking a cycleway, or installing some planters outside a community building.

Our Civic Pride team can connect you with like-minded people and help you or your community group organise an event.  They can loan you equipment, offer funding advice and promote your event through different networks.
