The Prime Minister has today set out the next steps in the easing of lockdown. See the press conference at Youtube: Prime Minister's Coronavirus press conference (10 May 2021) for details.

Between 4.00pm on Wednesday 12 May and 7.30am on Thursday 13 May, the following systems will be unavailable due to essential maintenance: our online council tax, business rates and housing benefit overpayments service, our welfare assistance form and our test and trace payments form. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Salt bins

We have more than 2,000 salt (grit) bins in County Durham which we aim to keep filled during the winter months.

Salt bin requests and refills

Request a new salt bin or ask for a refill

For refills, please quote the reference number of the salt bin which can be found on the top or the side of the bin.

What is considered when a new salt bin request is sent to us?

Roads

  • steep gradients
  • severe bends
  • traffic category
  • bus route
  • accident history

Footpaths

  • high pedestrian activity
  • gradients
  • pedestrians with reduced mobility
  • health centres
  • local services

There is specific criteria which must be met before a salt bin can be placed in a new location, as outlined in the salt bin assessment form (appendix 4) in the winter maintenance policy located on our Winter service plan web page.
