Town centre temporary improvement measures (Covid19)

As you return to our town centres, we're making temporary changes to ensure that they are safe places which enable social distancing. We will continue to monitor and change these measures as necessary.

Why we have to make these temporary changes

To plan for the return of shoppers into our town centres, we've had to assume that potentially a large number of people could return. This presents a significant challenge in the majority of our town centres - we need to ensure that narrow paths can cater for people trying to pass at a safe distance and provide adequate space for people queuing outside shops.

To accommodate this, we've received government funding to put in place some temporary changes.

This includes:

  • removal of some loading and parking bays, and taxi ranks
  • re-allocation of bus bays / pull ins (which may stop traffic, when people are using temporary bus stand when buses pull over)
  • introduction of new cycle lanes.
