History
In 1854-1857 County Durham was surveyed by the Ordnance Survey and a series of maps at a scale of 25 inches to the mile (1:2500) was produced. An updated edition of these maps was produced in 1894-1897, a third edition in 1914-1919 and a fourth edition (but only of certain maps) in 1938-1942. 736 maps were required in each edition to cover the entire county.
How to use this layer
This layer shows the area covered by each of the maps and gives the Ordnance Survey reference number for each map. It is not possible to show the original maps on the GIS system, but most of them are available in the County Record Office, and copies of a whole map or a part of a map can be supplied by the County Record Office. The 'Historical Maps' facility, which is available on the GIS system, displays 1:10560 maps.
