The Durham County Record Office 'Maps' section offers the following 'layers' using an interactive technology known as Geographic Information System (GIS) to allow you to interact with both modern and historical maps. Click on the layer titles in the left hand navigator for further information on (or to launch the GIS showing) the following:
1:2500 Durham County Series
A series of maps at a scale of 25 inches to the mile (1:2500) first produced in 1854-1857 when County Durham was surveyed by the Ordnance Survey. This layer indicates which maps were produced by the Ordnance Survey, and most are available in the County Record Office. Copies of a whole map or part of a map can be supplied by the County Record Office.
Durham CollieriesA layer showing the areas in County Durham in which a colliery (mine, shaft, pit) was located from c.1850 to c.1990. Information such as mine name, location, date sunk and date closed is also available via an accompanying database.
