Map Tools

The 'Map Tools' are located within a toolbar below the map. You can use the tools to interact directly with the map, to navigate and to get extra information. Depending on which map tool you select, your mouse will perform a different function.

Get Info

Get Info

The 'Get Info' tool can be used to display basic information about a feature (or a grid square) within a layer and to go to the relevant information. The GIS will display summary information about the chosen feature on the left hand side of the screen.

Zooming

It is possible to zoom in and out of the map to show more or less detail at various scales. When zooming, the system will automatically display the most appropriate Ordnance Survey map background for the current scale.

Zoom In

Zoom In

Click the 'Zoom In' button on the toolbar, then click on the map. The point at which you click will become the centre of the zoomed area. To zoom into a particular portion of the map, click and drag a box by holding down your left mouse button.

Zoom Out

Zoom Out

Click on the 'Zoom Out' button on the toolbar then click on the map.

Zoom to Full Extent

Zoom to Full Extent

Clicking on the 'Full Extent' tool automatically zooms the map to fit all of the features on any 'loaded layers' onto the map.

Previous Zoom

Zoom Previous

Use this tool to jump back to the previous zoom level.

Zoom to Historical Maps

Zoom to Historical Maps

Historical map backgrounds are available only at or below a scale of 1:10,000. Clicking on the 'Historical Maps' button will automatically zoom to this level and activate the Historical Maps drop down menu. Next, use the 'Historical Maps' dropdown menu to select different map date.

Map Scale

Scale Box

In addition to using the zoom tools, it is also possible to change the map 'scale' to view different levels of detail on the map. Click inside the scale box, highlight and delete the old scale. Use your keyboard number pad to enter a new scale before hitting the 'Enter' or 'return' key. Remember that reducing the number is equivalent to zooming in, and increasing the number is equivalent to zooming out. Note that, when you are adjusting the map scale, the GIS will automatically display the most appropriate Ordnance Survey map background for your selection.

Panning

Panning

Use the 'Pan' tool on the toolbar to move around the map. Click and drag the map by holding down your left mouse button to move the map in any direction. Alternatively, you can move around the map using the 'North, South, East and West' tools on the toolbar. The map will automatically pan one map width in the chosen direction.

Print Map

Use the 'Print Map' button on the toolbar to open a new browser window, which contains a printable page. Next use your browser 'File' menu and select 'Print' to send this page to your printer. To print the maps produced by this system your web browser must be capable of opening 'pop up' windows. Please note that the use of 'pop up blockers' will disable the printing option provided by this system. Please ensure you have read our copyright information before printing any maps.
