The Nuremberg Laws were passed by Adolf Hitler’s government in 1935. The rationale behind them was that purity of German blood was essential for the continued existence of the German people. The Nuremberg Laws:
- Withdrew citizenship from Jews; they could not vote or hold public office.
- Made marriage and extra-marital sex between Jews and German citizens illegal.
- Banned Jews from certain jobs.
- Made Jews carry identity papers marked ‘Jude’ and wear a Star of David badge.
- Forbade Jews from employing German women under the age of 45.
- Forbade Jews from flying the Reich (or national) flag.
