Education

Schools

The Record Office holds records for schools located in the present county of Durham and the borough of Darlington, but they are incomplete.
Pupils’ names appear in admission/discharge registers which, unfortunately, have not survived for many schools. Log books (diaries) kept by headteachers very rarely mention individual pupils.

Punishment books and medical records are closed to the public for 75 years and log books and other records are closed for 30 years. All closure periods run from the final date of a volume or the date of the individual record.

You will find details of our holdings for schools in County Durham and Darlington in catalogues which can be searched online.

You will find current information about schools and colleges in County Durham on the website of Durham County Council. You will also find current information about schools and colleges in the borough of Darlington online.
