Colleges

You will find in the Record Office records for the following establishments:

College of St Hild and St Bede in Durham City

The Record Office holds some records for the College of St Hild and St Bede, commonly known as Hild Bede, a college of the University of Durham. Hild Bede was formed in 1975 by the merger of two single-sex teacher training colleges: the College of the Venerable Bede, for men, was founded in 1839 and was associated with the University from 1892; while St Hild’s College, for women, was founded in 1858 and was associated with the University from 1896.

As some of the material is of a confidential nature it is subject to a closure period. Applications to look at material normally closed may be made to the County Archivist and will be referred to the authorities of the present college for their decision.

You will find details of our holdings for the colleges in catalogues which can be searched online.

Darlington College of Education

The Record Office holds some records for Darlington College of Education. The College, founded by the British & Foreign School Society, was a teacher training college from 1876 to 1978. In 1978 the building became Darlington Arts Centre and is now owned by Darlington Borough Council.

As some of the material is of a confidential nature it is subject to a closure period of 100 years. All closure periods run from the final date of a volume or the date of the individual record.

You will find details of our holdings for the college in catalogues which can be searched online.
