Record Office Database

How do I find out more about the Record Office database?

You can search the database online.

The Durham Record Office Database contains copies of all of the catalogues of documents held in the Office, and some of the Office's photographs which are available for viewing online.

The database also holds:

  • Brief details of Durham records held in other archive repositories.
  • An index to places in Robert Surtees, The History and Antiquities of the County Palatine of Durham ... (1816-1840), and H. Conyers Surtees’ continuation booklets to the earlier publication.
  • An index to family trees in Robert Surtees, The History and Antiquities of the County Palatine of Durham ... (1816-1840).
  • An index to places on the first edition 1:10560 plans of the county (1856).
  • An index to obituaries appearing in the Durham Directory from 1856 to 1916.
  • Titles and authors of books and pamphlets in the Record Office library.
You will find further advice about searching the Durham County Record Office database online or in the Search Instructions.
