Milburngate Bridge closures
To make Lumiere an enjoyable experience for all, some roads will be closed or partially closed. Some of these (on Milburngate Bridge) are likely to cause significant delays to traffic coming into, or through, the city in the build up to and throughout the festival period. You can find details of these below.
We strongly recommend you use alternative transport or take a different route throughout the festival period if you regularly commute through Durham.
If you're travelling to Lumiere, the best option is to use our Lumiere Park and Ride or travel by bus or rail.
Thank you for your patience and support during Lumiere.
- At the start and end of the festival, both eastbound lanes will be closed, and diversions put in place. See our:
- Throughout the festival, one eastbound lane will be closed on Milburngate Bridge (no diversion in place). See our:
- illustration of closures ('During festival' map) or
- single lane closure on Milburngate Bridge (eastbound) information
On Sunday 19 November both lanes eastbound will be closed so that we can remove the barrier and re-open all lanes for Monday morning. They will be closed from 11.30pm until 06.00am Monday 20 November and a signed diversion will be put in place.
From 06.00am Thursday 16 November until 11.30pm Sunday 20 November, there will only be one eastbound traffic lane.
This is likely to cause significant delays throughout the day and if possible you should seek an alternative route.
