County Durham Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy

This is the refreshed Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy for County Durham. The strategy outlines a three year vision for improving health and wellbeing, and addressing health inequalities in the county.

Our vision for the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy (JHWS) is to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of County Durham and reduce health inequalities.

What is the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy?

The JHWS is a document that informs and influences decisions about health and social care services in County Durham, so that they are focused on the needs of the people who use them and tackle the factors that affect health and wellbeing, for example drugs, alcohol, unhealthy weight, mental and physical wellbeing.

The production of the JHWS is a legal requirement under the Health and Social Care Act 2012.

The Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy Delivery Plan will ensure the strategy is effective and performance managed, allowing transparency in demonstrating the progress that has been made and what is still left to do.

How was the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy put together?

County Durham's Health and Wellbeing Board has the responsibility to deliver the JHWS. The strategy is based on information in the Integrated Needs Assessment and the Annual Report of the Director of Public Health, as well as other policy related documents and views of local people.

Extensive consultation took place during 2015 with over 400 people, including children and young people, patients, service users and carers giving their views on the refreshed Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy.  Additional actions have been included in the JHWS to reflect their comments.

Health and Wellbeing Board Engagement Event 2016

The Health and Wellbeing Board's Big Tent Engagement Event was attended by over 200 people and was used to gather the views of service users, patients, carers, people from the voluntary and community sector and key stakeholders, to shape future services in County Durham.

The workshops included a wide range of discussion topics including health and social care integration, reducing obesity, oral health, and mental health services in County Durham.

The presentations from the event are shown below:
