Durham Road User Charge Zone
The Durham Road User Charge Zone aims to reduce traffic congestion, reduce pollution and improve air quality in the heavily pedestrianised historic streets of Durham peninsula. The charge encourages you to gain access to Durham peninsula outside of the Durham Road User Charge Zone hours of operation, when pedestrian footfall is low. This creates safer and more attractive streets for everyone including residents, businesses, shoppers or visitors.

The Durham Road User Charge Zone is located on Durham peninsula, the home of the historic World Heritage site of Durham Cathedral and castle, as well as Durham Market Place, Durham Chorister School, Durham University colleges and a variety of shops and businesses.When Does it Operate?

All vehicles that enter the clearly defined Durham Road User Charge Zone during its hours of operation must pay a the charge unless they qualify for an exemption.How Do I Pay the Charge?
You can pay the charge either:- At the exit of the Durham Road User Charge Zone - The exit of the Durham Road User Charge Zone is controlled with an automatic bollard linked to a payment machine. The payment machine will accept £2.00, £1.00, 50p, 20p and 10p coins. No change is given.
- At the Parking Shop - If you are unable to pay the charge at the time of exiting the Durham Road User Charge Zone, you can contact the Parking Shop via the intercom located adjacent to the payment machine to request the bollard be lowered remotely. However, you must remember to pay the charge to the Parking Shop by 6.00pm that day. Payment can be made with cash at the counter or by debit or credit card over the phone.
What if I Do Not Pay the Charge?
If you do not pay the charge you will still be permitted to exit the Durham Road User Charge Zone. You can contact the Parking Shop via the intercom located adjacent to the payment machine to request the bollard be lowered remotely. However, failure to pay the charge to the Parking Shop by 6.00pm that day will result in a Charge Notice becoming payable by the registered keeper of the vehicle.
If you attempt to avoid the charge by exiting the Durham Road User Charge Zone by driving through a No Entry, your actions will be recorded by CCTV and your details passed to Durham Constabulary who may issue you with a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN). If you have received an FPN you should contact Durham Constabulary on 0845 6060365.
