What is Extra Care?
Extra Care is a combination of specially designed housing and 24 hour care and support developed to offer older people and disabled people over the age of 55 an alternative to moving into a care home.Moving into Extra Care
Moving into Extra Care is just like a house move not a move into care and tenants are encouraged to furnish their flats to their own tastes. All tenants have a tenancy agreement and pay rent to the Housing Association.Benefits of Extra Care
The benefits of Extra Care include the ability of tenants to combine maintaining their privacy and independence with the availability of support and companionship if required.Extra Care gives you:
- Your own home
- A self contained flat with a bedroom, lounge, kitchen and bathroom with a level entry shower
- Full central heating
- An emergency alarm link
- Flats suitable for people who use a wheelchair and there are lifts to the upper floors
- Personal care and support to meet your assessed needs
Communal Facilities
Communal facilities include:- Lounge
- Restaurant
- Launderette
- Access to a local shop
- Landscaped gardens
- Guest suite
- A laundry and cleaning service if and when required
- A hair and beauty salon
- 24 hour support available
- Security with CCTV and intercoms
- Social events and activities available for those who wish to take part

There are currently eight Extra Care schemes in County Durham:- Appleton Lodge, Spennymoor - Extra Care for people with memory problems
- Charles Dickens Lodge, Barnard Castle
- Chester View, Ouston, Chester-le-Street
- Harbour Lodge, Seaham
- Maple Court, Consett
- Southfield Lodge, Crook
- Sycamore Lodge, Spennymoor
- The Orchards, Brandon
How do I apply?
Durham County Council Social Care and Health service have established a detailed process for anyone wishing to apply to become a tenant of Extra Care.You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this information.
