Family Learning in County Durham

Family Learning describes a wide range of activities and courses where children, their parents, grandparents, carers, and/or relatives are involved in learning together.

Programmes are tailored to the needs of children and their parents, relatives or carers, mainly in schools and nurseries but also in libraries, community centres and other venues. The length of time is flexible - 2 or 3 hour workshops, short courses of up to 6 weekly sessions or longer courses of a term or a year. Many courses bring parents and children together to improve skills for both; others offer tuition to parents/carers alone so that they are able to provide their children with greater support at home.

The success of the programmes is due to the informality and flexibility of the teaching approach balanced with parental contributions and fun activities for parents and children.

Our aims include:

  • Improving the performance of children through parents and children working together.
  • Helping parents to feel involved in the development and support of their own child's learning.
  • Helping parents to understand how children are taught in school.
  • Improving skills with word, number and ICT.
  • Improving home school links.
  • Supporting parenting skills.
  • Helps foster a positive attitude toward school.

Family Learning in County Durham is delivered by Education in the Community (EiC). Since 2001, funding has been provided by the Learning and Skills Council. A wide range of Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy programmes is delivered by the Skills for Life team and the Adult and Community Learning area teams are delivering an increasing number of wide ranging family programmes. Last year EiC worked in well over 130 schools and centres across the county delivering a wide range of programmes from "Play and Language" to "Literacy and Numeracy through Art and Craft".
