Debt Counselling

The Trading Standards complaints and advice team frequently receives calls from members of the public who are experiencing financial difficulties and who need money advice or debt counselling.

This is a specialised field and falls outside the remit of Trading Standards.

People who require debt counselling or money advice should speak to their local Citizens Advice Bureau.

Money advisers and debt counsellors are trained to assess your finances, to differentiate between high and low priority debts and deal with them accordingly. In appropriate cases they will negotiate on your behalf with companies in order to ease the burden of debt. The message is:

• It can be sorted out.
• You don’t always have to pay the amount demanded straight away.
• Don’t wait till it's too late - get help early.
