Community Development Team
"Involving and Enabling Local People to Make a Difference."
The Community Development team was established in October 2000 to support and promote Durham County Council's approach to community engagement. The team also work very closely with local County Councillors supporting their Community Leadership role.The team has 11 Community Development Officers (CDO's) who work across County Durham.
The work of the team is underpinned by Durham County Council's Corporate Community Development Policy and Strategy (CDP&S).
All CDO's work to address the four Strategic Objectives outlined in the CDP&S:
- Improving Community Governance
- Better Partnership Working
- Building Community Capacity
- Tackling Social Exclusion
Examples of Community Development in Action
- Working in partnership with local Councils for Voluntary Services (CVS) to support community groups.
- Supporting a local steering group in establishing a Parish Council.
- Supporting local people to be involved in national consultations and help influence policy.
- Highlighting new initiatives which could benefit local communities to increase enterprise and involvement.
- Developing a community development training programme and delivering this across Durham County Council and to other groups and organisations.
