Pedal Cycle Casualties

There were 71 pedal cycle casualties during 2006, 10 less than in the previous year. As seen from the graph, it is mainly the younger cyclists (under the age of 15) who are most likely to be injured, although this is because they tend to use bikes more than other age groups. It is hoped the increase in the number of dedicated cycle routes and improved facilities throughout the county can only help further reduce the number of casualties. Road safety training and cycling proficiency will also help in reducing the number of pedal cycle accidents taking place.

Not surprisingly the majority of child pedal cyclist casualties occur on minor roads, in particular, urban roads. 76% of the child cycle casualties occurred on roads where the speed limit was below 40mph.

Wearing a cycle helmet could save your life!
