Future Population of County Durham

The following report highlights the future population trends that are anticipated for the County and its seven constituent local authority districts by the year 2021. These projections start from a base year of 2003 and clearly illustrate the dynamic changes which are expected to occur over the period to the County’s age structure; particularly with regard to natural decline and the relative growth in the elderly population.


These trends are likely to continue beyond 2021, reaching a peak around the middle of the Century. The effects and consequences of these longer-term projections are also discussed.

Please note that the latest population projections use a slightly different population base compared to the 1999 based projections, as students are now counted at their place of study rather than at their home addresses. You can access the report, in Adobe Acrobat format, below:
