County Durham Cycling Strategy

Pedal Power! - A Vision for Cycling

"To have a network of routes and facilities throughout the County which enable cycling to be a safe, attractive and enjoyable mode of transport, where people are encouraged to cycle for commuting, travelling to school, shopping and recreational purposes."

Targets

Target 1: To achieve a doubling in cycling to school and work across 'School Travel Plan' schools and 'Green Travel Plan' organisations between 2002 and 2007.

Target 2: Reduce the casualty rates for pedal cyclists per mile cycled by 10% between 2002 and 2007.

Target 3: Reduce the rate of cycle theft per mile cycled by 10% between 2002 and 2007.

Target 4: To increase the number of 9-11 year olds receiving cycle safety training per year by 10% between 2002 and 2007.

Target 5: To ensure that all main town centres in County Durham have investment in cycling improvements by 2006.

A Few Facts on Cycling

  • In County Durham there are 100 miles of off-road cycle route and 18 miles of on-road routes
  • There are 82 miles of the National Cycle Network routes in County Durham
  • 23% of County Durham's residents say that they would consider cycling up to 5 miles in any one journey (information from 2001 Local Transport Plan Survey)
