St. Chad's RCVA Primary School Proposed Engineering Works
A travel working group has been established at the school in order to address particular travel concerns and, as a result, information has been gathered by means of questionnaires and discussions held between Durham County Council, school staff, students and parents.
Having evaluated the information provided, the following engineering proposals have been formulated.
As part of the Council’s best practice procedure it is intended to introduce Traffic Regulation Orders for the existing “school keep clear” markings, providing them with the required legislation to allow them to be appropriately enforced. Both of the proposed “school keep clear” road markings will be enforceable between the hours of 8.00am – 6.00pm, Monday to Friday.
This will require slight modifications to the existing road markings in order to bring them in line with current design standards.
These modifications to the “school keep clear” markings will allow us to increase the length of the existing bus stop, providing an improved boarding/alighting position within the existing footway. It is intended to introduce the appropriate signing and road markings to allow the bus stop clearway to be enforced.
As part of the original Travel Planning engineering works, a Park and Stride system was introduced, however, the original parking area was lost due to local housing development. The Park and Stride continues to operate, with parents now parking to the east of the school, in the area of the cemetery, and the children walk to school from this point.
This location has proven to be a successful alternative to the original parking location, and ensures the area immediately in front of the school entrance remains free from traffic. Unfortunately the footway provision to the south side of the road terminates at a point just west of the cemetery, it is therefore proposed to construct a 1.8m wide footway in the verge adjacent to the cemetery, to provide pedestrians with a link to the existing footway provision.
As the support or otherwise of local residents is an important part of the consultation process I would be grateful if you would provide any comments you may have on the above proposals before Friday 18 July.
