Single and Double Yellow Lines

Single and double yellow lines indicate that parking restrictions are in place and that no waiting is allowed. Single yellow lines indicate that waiting is not allowed during restricted hours, (these hours are indicated on a plate alongside the lines and we would suggest you check along the length of the line for these plates), outside of these hours you can park on these lines. Double yellow lines however mean that waiting is prohibited 24 hours a day.

Single and double yellow lines do not restrict loading/unloading and picking up and dropping off passengers unless they are accompanied by kerb markings which indicate additional restrictions.

Please note that yellow lines apply from the centre of the road to the edge of the highway. This includes pavements and verges alongside the lines, which means that you can not park on the pavement or a verge beside a yellow line.

Kerb Markings

Loading or unloading is allowed where there are no additional kerb markings (which indicate a ban on loading). Single yellow kerb markings mean loading or unloading is restricted during the time shown on the time plate situated next to the lines, double yellow kerb markings on the other hand mean no loading or unloading at any time.

What is Loading or Unloading?

Loading and unloading is considered to be taking place where items are being taken to and from a vehicle, but this does not cover packing, unpacking or assembly, and stopping to have a conversation. Stopping to go to the toilet is also not covered. As soon as the last item is loaded or unloaded, the vehicle must be moved to a parking place.

Picking Up and Dropping Off Passengers

Drivers can stop on yellow lines to pick up passengers, but waiting for passengers is not permitted. When picking up or dropping off you must stay with your vehicle at all times unless your passengers need help getting in and out of your vehicle.

Blue Badge Holders

Blue badge holders can park for up to three hours on single or double yellow lines when no loading restrictions are in place and where the vehicle does not cause an obstruction. The blue badge must be displayed and the clock must be set to the time of arrival.

What if I Park on a Single or Double Yellow Line?

If a vehicle is parked on a single yellow or double yellow line and a Police Officer does not observe any of the activities mentioned above taking place a Fixed Penalty Notice will be issued.

If you have received a Fixed Penalty Notice you should contact Durham Constabulary on 0845 6060365.
