Manhole Covers

We are usually only responsible for highway surface water gullies and the associated manhole covers. The remaining manholes in adopted highways are generally the responsibility of the Public Utility Companies to whom they belong, such as the gas, electric, water and communication companies.

The generic term for manholes and gratings in the highway is Ironwork. There are specifications for the installation and maintenance of ironwork. As part of our frequent inspections regime, we inspect highways on a routine basis. This is carried out more frequently on more heavily used roads and through this method we respond to any defects. Problems, which are noticed during routine Highway Inspections are reported to the appropriate Utility Company for them to make a repair.
