Durham Cathedral Bus

The Cathedral Bus (Service 40) is operated using two 'state of the art' Optare Alero minibuses and is funded in part by the Durham City Road User Charge.

The buses are able to 'kneel' by lowering the front suspension to provide easily accessible transport for wheelchair users and parents with children in buggies. If further assistance is required a ramp can be lowered on request to make boarding or alighting even easier. Inside, the bus has a level floor and space to comfortably accommodate a wheelchair or child's buggy. All journeys on the bus cost 50p, tickets are valid all day. Senior citizens travel free and children under 14 years at half fare. Explorer North East tickets are also valid.

From May to September extra journeys will be operated between the coach park and the Cathedral as required to cater for demand. These journeys will not be operated using a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

The service operates to the Sunday timetable on all public holidays except 1 January, 25 December and 26 December when no service will operate. Between Christmas Day and New Year's Day a Saturday timetable will apply.

Cathedral Bus is operated by John Bell Travel under contract to Durham County Council.
