Bus Shelters
The responsibility for the provision and maintenance of bus shelters lies, in general, with the appropriate district council. However, in Sedgefield and Teesdale Districts these duties lie with the Parish and Town Councils. The exception to this is where the shelters are provided by 'Adshel', who design and manufacture bus shelters which have advertising on them. As there are a number of contracts with Adshel across the county, you should contact us if you have any queries with regards to this type of bus shelter. We will contact the relevant people to deal with the issue for you.
The District, Parish and Town Councils do require permission from us, as the Highway Authority, to erect a bus shelter on the Highway.
The location of bus stops and all other associated infrastructure is our responsibility. This includes:
- Bus stop poles
- Signs
- Timetable information cases
- Raised kerbs bus box and clearway markings (these markings are provided in order to prevent obstruction of the bus stop to ensure passengers can board and alight safely)
