Abandoned Vehicles

We take the issue of abandoned vehicles very seriously. Motorists who dump their cars will be charged with the cost of removing them. The Refuse Disposal Act 1978, allows local authorities to move a wreck within 24 hours, if it is considered an eyesore, or a danger to the public.

Where registered owners choose to ignore the notice served upon them, they will be charged for the removal of the vehicle. Once removed, it becomes the possession of the council, who may also charge for storage and if necessary, the destruction of the vehicle.

The maximum penalty for abandoning a car is a £2500 fine, or three months in prison.

Older cars are classified under the hazardous waste list and dumping an 'end of life' vehicle carries a penalty of a £20,000 fine or six months in prison.
