Why Walk To School

Or more to the point … why not!

Walking – Research shows that many children choose walking as their preferred choice for their school journey.

Alertness – Pupils who walk to school are more attentive than those who travel by car.

Less stressful - By walking to school you avoid fighting with traffic congestion and then having to hunt for a parking space when you get there.

Keeping Fit – Experts recommend that the best way to lose weight and stay healthy is to find an exercise that will easily and comfortably fit into your life, such as walking to school.

Together – Friends and family can walk to and from school together and enjoy some quality time – shared time that is so often missing in hectic family life now.

One mile a day – A brisk one-mile walk to school and back burns around 150 calories

Safety training – Walking regularly with a child from a young age enables them to develop life skills; preparing children with the road safety and personal awareness skills they will need as they become more independent.

Congestion – Fewer cars on the roads is good for the environment and local communities; fewer cars at the school gate make it safer for pupils on their journey to and from school.

Health benefits – Walking strengthens bones and improves bone density, as well as improving general health and fitness.

One Week – You’ll be surprised at the amount you save in fuel costs when you walk for just one week. Even walking one or two days a week will save a lot over a year.

Out and about – Nine out of ten parents who walk their children to school see it as a better way of meeting people, with nearly half of these parents dropping in for coffee or socialising in the evenings with people they have met on the school run.

Learning for Life – Walking regularly enables a child to become more familiar with their surroundings and provides them with an opportunity to learn about the weather, changing seasons and their environment generally.

So … why not walk. Give it a try and see what a difference it makes.
