The Walk To School Campaigns
There are two Walk to School campaigns each year during May and October. National Walk to School Week occurs in May, and the International Walk to School campaign takes place during October. Visit the International Walk to School page to find out more about this specific event.
Schools that have a completed School Travel Plan, or are working towards completing their Plan, are expected to take part in one or other of these campaigns as part of their commitment to encouraging sustainable travel.
Monday 21 - Friday 25 May 2007 – National Walk to School Week
Durham County Council supports those schools that wish to promote the importance of walking. Schools can choose to celebrate both campaigns or they may prefer to celebrate either the National or International Walk to School campaigns. Alternatively if these dates are not convenient with the school diary then schools can choose to hold their own ‘Walk to School Week’ at a time that is convenient in their school calendar. If your school is planning to host a Walk to School campaign outside the national promotional dates, the free Teachers Resource Pack will still be useful. Please contact the Travel Plan team to request your copy.
Schools promote the Walk to School Campaigns in a variety of imaginative ways. Ideas include incentives for pupils who walk to school, for teachers to incorporate road safety, health and environmental awareness into the curriculum and Walk to School themed publicity events. An extensive range of ideas are included in the Teachers Resource Pack.
