Case Studies
Currently over half the schools within County Durham are benefiting from the development of a School Travel Plan. Some of the completed projects include:
However, don’t feel it is necessary to identify a lot of engineering measures to achieve something. Ludworth Primary School has had fantastic success in removing parental parking from outside of their school. How did they achieve it? With bucket loads of enthusiasm and two banners that the pupils themselves designed.
- Kelloe Primary School identified the need for a parent waiting shelter, secure cycle parking, new footpaths, improved lighting, high visibility signage and traffic calming measures. The School Council also identified a local car park from which they intend to operate a ‘Park and Stride’ initiative.
- Students from Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College worked in collaboration with the School Travel Planning Working Group and recommended the need for new secure cycle parking as well as an improved road crossing point, high visibility signage, a new gated access and separate cycleway leading to the cycle parking. Lighting to the frontage of the school and designated bus bays has made significant contribution to encouraging sustainable travel within the school.
- Our Lady and St Thomas RC Primary School in Willington identified the need to install dropped crossing points at the School Crossing Patrol duty point, high visibility signage, the renewal of the School Keep Clear road markings and the replacement of the existing pedestrian guardrail with ‘vizi-rail’ to allow better visibility for the pupils. Combined cycle parking and a parent waiting shelter was also identified. In conjunction with the introduction of the engineering measures the pupils also organised a ‘Park Away’ campaign and requested that parents and carers keep the frontage of the school clear of vehicles by parking away from the school and walking for the remaining distance.
