School Travel Planning Newsletter

The school travel planning team issues a termly newsletter to all schools in the County. The newsletter is packed full of the latest school travel planning news, campaigns, initiatives and events. It also regularly features Sam and his activities along with case studies from schools that have benefited from developing a School Travel Plan.

Issue 1, November 2003

What is a School Travel Plan and how will it benefit our school? Secure cycle parking is provided at Woodham Community College.

Issue 2, May 2004

An explanation of Walking Buses and how they operate. The government provides capital grants for School Travel Planning and a new bus pilot is launched at Belmont Comprehensive School.

Issue 4, June 2005

An explanation of Park and Stride and how it operates. Sam joins the Travel Plan Team. Ferryhill Business College benefits from new cycling parking, upgraded signage and improved lighting. Groundwork East Durham helps pupils from Thornhill Primary School to develop the skills necessary to get the most out of accessing transport opportunities in the local area

Issue 5, December 2005

Sam meets Health Minister and assists in the launch of three Walking Buses at Neville’s Cross. The Travel Plan Team work with Chester-le-Street Primary Care Trust to support the ‘Family Initiative Supporting Children’s Health (FISC) Project’ during International Walk to School Week and promoted the theme ‘Walk to School – it’s good for the heart’

Issue 7 November 2006

The first International Walk to School Month takes place. Pupils from Catchgate Primary School learn about the walk to school in America and children at Belmont Infant and Junior Schools take part in an initiative with B&Q Durham.

Two walking zones launched in County Durham and an American Adventure leads to County Durham! Find out information on the new resource develped by the Travel Plan Team and read about the first Walking Bus in County Durham to be sponsored by a company.

Issue 9, July 2007

Students from The Hermitage School work with Faber Maunsell, international, environmental, transportation, building and engineering consultancy to measure dust particles from vehicles. Witton-le-Wear Primary School celebrate the first anniversary of their Walking Bus and children from Gainford C.E. Primary learn how to fix a puncture.
