Doorstep Crime Survey of the Public Doorstep Callers/Traders 2007

Durham County Council Trading Standards Service, has undertaken a public survey, seeking views and experiences of doorstep traders and callers.

During the period December 2006 to February 2007, the survey was carried out with a targeted selection of 1,000 older adults, aged 65+, in receipt of care services within their own homes, selected from across the county. The survey produced a return rate of 32%.

This survey repeated a similar exercise undertaken in 2002, enabling us to review the current trends in relation to Doorstep Trading issues.

Since 2002, a number of educational and preventative measures have been introduced by the Trading Standards Service and partners, aimed at raising awareness of the subject of doorstep crime.

These include:

  • Awareness training and talks to older adult groups and the wider community, including those agencies interacting with older adults on a daily basis.
  • Establishing a countywide Doorstep Crime Steering Group.
  • Setting up an Email Early Warning Network.
  • Introducing a Registered Trader Scheme.
  • Publicity to raise awareness of the issue of doorstep crime.
  • Awareness raising events with the public and community groups.
  • Setting up 5 pilot Cold Calling Zones..
  • Partnership working to support target hardening provision.
