Barnard Castle

Transport Policy

Barnard Castle serves as the market town for the rural area of Teesdale District. The district is the most sparsely populated in the county with twenty nine people per square kilometre. Measures to be pursued are to:
  • Improve public transport facilities, with greater accessibility for disabled people.
  • Introduce pedestrian safety initiatives including the provision of new pedestrian facilities on the A67 Galgate at the junction with Montalbo Road and John Street.
  • Introduce cycling provision to include identification and signing of minor road on-street cycle routes between housing, town centre, schools, sports centre and industrial area of Harmire Road. Also to include secure parking facilities for bicycles.
  • Introduce Safe Routes to Schools projects including improvements to footpath links around Teesdale Comprehensive School.
  • Improve access for people with disabilities and to build on work already undertaken in addressing access issues raised by Teesdale Community Resources disability survey. To implement schemes identified by a local Access Forum.
  • Examine traffic management and traffic calming initiatives to reduce the impact of vehicles in the town centre.
  • Examine car parking controls to increase parking opportunities for tourists and shoppers.
