Short Break Childcare
How do I choose someone to provide short break care for my child?
You should feel happy and at ease about anyone who is to care for your child. Remember whoever you employ will spend time alone with your child. Plan to take your time in making your choice. You should:- Always ask for two referees and check these carefully - telephone the person who has given the references
- Ask for a criminal records check
- If there are gaps in the person's employment history make sure they are explained to your satisfaction
- Speak to other parents who have employed the person concerned
Interview all candidates carefully
Ask questions:- What experience of working with children has this person had?
- What ages of children have they worked with?
- Does this person share your views on:
- Managing children's behaviour?
- Daily routine?
- Health eating?
- Play and activities?
- How would they cope in a range of emergency situations?
- What do they know about safety, accident prevention and first aid?
- Are they in generally good health?
- Do they have a clean driving licence?
- Are you happy for them to transport your child?
- Do they have safe seating/seat belts in their car?
- Do they smoke? and are you happy with this?
- Where would they take your child?
- Who are the other members of their household?
- Why did they leave their previous employment?
- Do not accept one-word or short answers to your questions, try to encourage the candidate to speak freely and listen to what he/she says
- Do not employ someone until you feel they have the best interests of your child at heart
- Do not employ someone under the age of 16 to undertake a paid caring role, as people under the age of 16 may not be mature enough for such a responsibility
- Be cautious if you have any doubts about a person, do not employ them
- Once you employ someone spend time ensuring your child is able to settle with him/her
- Take note and listen carefully to everything your child communicates about the care they are receiving, including being aware of any changes in your child's behaviour.
