Children's Network Find it Guide

The Find it Guide is a helpful directory for disabled children and young people, their parents and carers. There is a copy for all children and young people registered with The Children's Network. Organisations working with children who have special needs can also have one copy for reference.

The find it guide

The Children's Network produced the Find it Guide with the help of Directions, Durham County Council's Social Information Service. This can also be found electronically on Community Information Online.

Children's Network members, their parents and carers often ask about leisure opportunities for children and young people who have special needs. Information about activities is grouped into Drama and Music, Sport, Youth Groups, Outdoor Activities, Indoor Games and Community Associations.

For each activity the Find it Guide answers the following questions:

  • Which area of County Durham is covered?
  • Age of children who are welcome?
  • When and where does the group meet?
  • Roughly how far is it to the nearest parking?
  • What activities are on offer?
  • Are there steps leading to the activities?
  • Are doors wide enough for wheel chairs?
  • Are the toilets wheel chair accessible?
  • Can adults go to help with children?
  • What are the costs and charges?
  • Who do I contact and where?

The Find it Guide includes feedback forms for children and young people, their parents and carers to send us their views about activities they have tried.

The Find it Guide - the future

The Children's Network wants to make sure that the information in the Find it Guide is kept up to date. Directions, Durham County Council's Social Information Service will check details with each organisation every year. In future editions we will include more information about organisations providing leisure opportunities for children and young people with special needs. Please tell us about any that you would like us to include.

From time to time, any necessary changes to existing information are made and new information is added. We then send out new and replacement pages. Its important to make sure everyone has accurate information. This is why we must keep a careful record of who has copies of the Find it Guide.
