What is the Adult Placement Scheme?
Adult Placement is the term used to describe the scheme whereby adults with a learning disability are offered either short term or long term care by other people who are known as 'approved carers'. The care takes place in the home of the approved carer.
The Adult Placement Scheme is registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI).
What services does the Adult Placement Scheme provide?
We provide:- Long term adult placement.
- Respite care.
- Holiday cover for parents.
- Respite and long term care for 16-18 year olds during the transitional period from Children's Services.
- Crisis Respite.
What are the aims of the Adult Placement Scheme?
Our aim is to:- Give people the opportunity to live with a family, long term or short term, as valued members of the local community.
- Develop placements in homes that can provide safe, clean and comfortable surroundings.
- Develop placements that can provide a warm, caring environment where a person can receive individual care and support when they need it.
- Provide a setting that allows the person with a learning disability to think and act independently and to take responsiblity for their actions.
- Provide a service that promotes choice and independence.
- Provide a service that is flexible and sensitive to the needs of people with a learning disablity and their families.
How does the Scheme work?
The scheme recruits Adult Placement Carers, who are assessed by the Adult Placement Co-ordinator and are 'approved' by the Adult Placement Panel. Approved carers then work with and care for adults with a learning disability.
The care is provided in the Adult Placement Carers' own home, enabling the person with a learning disability to live in a family environment and lead an ordinary life with support from the family as and when required.
The scheme is flexible, providing care from as little as a few hours to long term care. People will have the chance to meet carers and visit their home prior to any definite arrangements being made. Both sides must feel entirely happy before the placement begins.
How is the matching process arranged?
Introductory meetings are vital for both the client and the paid carer's benefit and every effort is made to develop an initial friendship. These visits are held in an environment where the client feels most comfortable.
The matching process may take time, as it is important that everyone involved is happy with the arrangements.
How do I become a Carer?
If you are interested in becoming a paid carer you should contact the Adult Placement Co-ordinator in your area, whose contact details can be found on this page. The Adult Placement Co-ordinator will arrange to visit you at your home to give you more information and answer any questions you may have.
If you choose to proceed, an assessment is carried out. The assessment involves several interviews with the carer and their family. As part of the process you will be asked to supply two references. We will ask your permission to contact your GP regarding your health, and an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check will be carried out. Induction Training will be provided. The completed assessment report is presented to a panel who decide whether applicants are suitable for the scheme.
Will I get support as a Carer?
The Adult Placement Co-ordinator will give support to the carer and their family, and the Social Worker will support the person who is placed with you. The placement will be monitored and reviewed at regular intervals.Financial Information
How much does it cost?
This will be determined by a financial assessment carried out by a Social Worker. How will the placement be financed?
Carers will be paid an agreed rate for placements. Finances are discussed with potential carers during the assessment process.
