About Special Educational Needs

A child has special educational needs if he or she has learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn or access education than most children of the same age.

Many children have special educational needs at some time. Some children have difficulties from a very early age, while others develop learning difficulties during their time at school.

Special educational needs can arise from a wide range of difficulties such as learning and understanding, behavioural, emotional and social difficulties, a visual or hearing impairment, a physical disability or a difficulty with communication.

Help or provision for special educational needs is usually made in the child’s ordinary, mainstream early years setting or school, sometimes with the help of outside specialists.

Special Educational Needs: some basic principles

Some points to bear in mind if your child has special educational needs:
  • Their special educational needs should be met.
  • He / she should have a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum.
  • Special educational needs are normally met in mainstream schools and early education settings.
  • Your child’s views should be taken into account.
  • You should be consulted on decisions affecting your child.
  • You have a vital role to play in supporting your child’s education.
