Accident Investigation and Prevention (AIP) Schemes

Introduction

Durham County Council undertakes an analysis of accident data to allow the design and implementation of remedial schemes at sites with an identified history of recorded personal injury accidents. All schemes are monitored to assess the ‘rate of return’ achieved on the investment based on national accident costs.

The County Council is working towards year 2010 casualty reduction targets which comprise:

  • 10% reduction in slight casualty rate.
  • 40% for reduction of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents.
  • 50% reduction in number of children killed or seriously injured.
It is anticipated that work on selected AIP schemes will help Durham County Council achieve its Year 2010 casualty reduction targets.

After carrying out a search through the County Council accident database, sites are identified with an historical accident pattern based on the previous 4 years' data. After analysis of these sites a number of schemes are taken forward into the AIP programme for the current financial year. Each of these sites will be fully investigated and any appropriate remedial work carried out. Other schemes and/or routes may be added as appropriate, subject to funding and staff resources. View AIP Sites for information of sites completed, currently underway or under investigation within County Durham.
